I created this illustration as a book cover proposal for The King of Elfland’s Daughter, a classic fantasy novel known for its poetic language and mythic atmosphere. The story follows Alveric’s journey to Elfland to bring back the elven princess Lirazel as his bride, and the consequences of their union as the boundaries between the human world and Elfland gradually dissolve. I designed two complementary color versions of the cover to create a striking visual effect when displayed together on a book stand.

A series of quick color variation sketches helped narrow the palette early in the process and ultimately saved hours of later refinement (Above).

PROJECT GOAL
Design a book cover concept for The King of Elfland’s Daughter, translating the novel’s poetic and mythic atmosphere into a contemporary visual interpretation.

MY ROLE
Worked as illustrator and graphic designer, developing visual concepts, composition studies, and the final digital illustration.

FINAL OUTCOME
A dreamlike cover illustration presented in two complementary color variations, designed to create a striking visual dialogue when displayed together.

KEY DESIGN DECISIONS
Narrative Tone: balanced mystery and melancholy to reflect the novel’s atmosphere.
Concept Development: iterative sketching exploring symbolic and compositional approaches.
Color Strategy: dual palettes enhancing contrast and display presence.
Illustration Style: Hand-drawn from initial sketch to final digital artwork, built with layered colour and textured brushwork.
